Moving out of PICU with help from RN Kerri |
Last time we did this, stitching the site was traumatic and painful, so this time the staff was careful. They first set him up with Percoset and Fentanyl, but he remained lucid. After bumping him on both of those and then adding some Ketadine, he finally admitted to feeling "a little insane" and said he saw floating particles....lol.
A nurse asked the normal questions, where are you, what day is it, etc. He still got them all correct. Was it enough? I asked him to identify the 5th planet. Pause, then "Jupiter". Count by 7's. Rapid-fire "7 14 21 28 35 42 49 56 63 70 77 84." What's the roman numeral for 17? Pause, then "XVII". Tell me about the Boston Tea Party. He got the high points about taxation protests, the East India Company, the tea dumped into the Boston Harbor, and some colonists dressed as Native Americans,
Seriously, kid? The nurses were...well, flabbergasted. They gave him one more bump on the Ketadine, and he abruptly stopped talking. Finally! Still, he was starting to talk coherently again before they even had time to put the two stitches in.
We were supposed to move out of the PICU after that and were preparing to do so, but his MD decided at the last minute to keep us in there one more night for observation. However, at about 5am we were advised that the PICU had abruptly filled to capacity overnight. As one of the "best" cases in the PICU, we were being moved out to make room for kids sicker than Mark.
We are now on the 8th floor, the top floor where teenagers usually are. All the cool stuff is up here, like a mini theater, and a gaming room. We now have our own shower, and Mark is completely untethered except for the pulse oximeter on his toe.
Mark is still having some mood swings, mainly tied to his meds, but he and Wendi had a great night last night, cracking up to Tim Hawkins videos on YouTube. He ate a full breakfast this morning, and at the moment he and Wendi are napping hard. As soon as this is posted I am going to join them.
Just had a wonderful visit from Amma Jessie from St. Anne's in Washougal, she dropped off a care package for Mark. And upon returning to the room I found a note from PICU RN Bonnie, who stopped by to check on Mark on her day off but found everyone asleep. The staff here is so very amazing.
If you want to stop by in the next few days, we are now in room 817. Thanks for your prayers, and thanks for reading.
Steve and i laughed SO HARD! I always resisted anesthesia ... until recently. Mark has a fierce intellect - love the man!

Dear Frank and Wendi,
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am on Facebook, I'm not really "on Facebook" that much so I just now have learned of Mark's tumor and surgery. I went back and read all of your Caring Bridge posts....Mark is truly an amazing young man ---no doubt, a product of good genes and great parenting. I just wanted to let you know that you will ALL be in our prayers!! Sending love and positive thoughts your way and asking God for a full and complete recovery for your precious son!

We were thinking of comming to vist, but unfortunately, Izzy, Maria, and I got the flu! So, we will have to keep praying for you from home! Keep up the great attitude. You are quite a witness for God's love, endurence, wisdom, and sence of humor!!!! Tell your parents that we miss them too and look foward to seeing them as well!!

If I could love this more than infinity I would! I am so glad Mark is doing better and that he has a roomier room and more cool stuff around him to do. It has been well documented that red-heads need more anesthetic and it wears off faster, however, Mark IS one REALLY smart young man!! Tons of love!!

Mark is truly amazing, but frankly, so are you and Wendi! Under the most horrific circumstances, you and your family are holding up like warriors! And to take the time to post all the updates as you do. Nothing short of amazing. Although not there in the flesh, I'm certainly there in spirit, cheering Mark (and U 2) on !! Many hugs...

Mark you are the most incredible kid! I can't believe that I have the great good fortune to be your grandma! I'm glad you are down to only one tether and that there is cool stuff on your floor. I hope you get to explore it soon. I love you very much.

As soon as I know I'm healthy (not sure if I'm battling a cold or allergies), we'd love to come visit! Love to hear all the good news. Hugs to you all!

Ya know... I must say I am quite touched by this Nurse Bonnie...I think our family would like to send her a little something as a thank you for how special she is has been to Mr Mark. My guess is she is just as attentive to all the amazing kiddos in the department. What a true blessing! I wonder if just sending it to the hospital would find her. Can you find out her last name for us? I know you guys are busy so if not, we will be detectives and figure it out on our own :) Praying for good rest, peace in the moments, and comfort in the pain.

All your kids are amazing. He needs to see Sons of Liberty if he hasn't already. Brian was watching it and at first I thought it was something else, so missed the first one and 1/2 of the second, then started paying attention, watched all of the third, DVR'd it so I can watch the whole thing.
ReplyDeleteSo happy to hear he is improving and is now in a room with a shower. We will continue the prayers and keep our Agape group updated. You all are getting prayers from 100's of people here. God must be thinking, "wow what a awesome kid this is with all these people praying for him". We agree. Hugs to you all, and looking forward to seeing the new addition and giving him his present.
